Evidence not clear for George Zimmerman’s self-defense claim

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — When George Zimmerman tries to convince a judge or jury that he shot Trayvon Martin in self-defense, the evidence he'll be able to call on appears to be a mixed bag.

More than 200 pages of photos and eyewitness accounts released by prosecutors Thursday show Zimmerman and Martin were in a loud and bloody fight in the moments leading up to the shooting and that Zimmerman appeared to be getting the worst of it, with wounds both to his face and the back of his head.

Victim of flesh-eating bacteria now able to communicate with her parents

ATLANTA | The parents of a young Georgia woman battling a flesh-eating bacterial infection say they've learned to read lips and are now able to communicate with their daughter.

Speaking on NBC's "Today" show today, Andy Copeland says his daughter Aimee told them she was thirsty, and that ice cream is the first thing she wants when she's able to eat on her own.

Copeland said in online updates that 24-year-old Aimee Copeland will lose her fingers but doctors hope to save the palms of her hands, which could allow her to someday use prosthetics.

3 NBC employees lose jobs over editing of George Zimmerman’s 911 call

NEW YORK (AP) — Three employees of NBC or an NBC-owned television station have now lost their jobs because of editing changes to a call made to police by George Zimmerman on the night he shot Trayvon Martin.

Lilia Luciano, an NBC News correspondent based in Miami, is no longer working at the network, spokeswoman Amy Lynn said. Her departure came as a result of an investigation into her March 20 "Today" show report on the Martin case.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) — Trayvon Martin's mother says the encounter between her son and a neighborhood watch volunteer was an accident, not the shooting that left her 17-year-old son dead.

Sybrina Fulton clarified her remarks Thursday to The Associated Press after she referred to what happened to her son on NBC's "Today" show as an accident.

Sarah Palin helps ‘Today’ repel Couric challenge from ‘GMA’

NEW YORK — Sarah Palin is largely responsible for the "Today" show repelling the Katie Couric challenge.

The Nielsen ratings company said Monday that NBC's morning show beat ABC's "Good Morning America" by a margin of 210,000 viewers in the ratings last week. That's one week after the gap between the two shows shrank to 119,000, the smallest in seven years.

Friend of man who fatally shot Sanford teen speaks out on national television

MIAMI (AP) — A man identified as a friend of the Florida neighborhood watch captain who fatally shot an unarmed black teenager said Monday the man would tell the teen's parents he's "very, very sorry" if he could.

Speaking on ABC's "Good Morning America," Joe Oliver said George Zimmerman is not a racist and has virtually lost his own life since the shooting.

"This is a guy who thought he was doing the right thing at the time and it's turned out horribly wrong," Oliver said.

Aretha Franklin: Shocked by Houston’s death

NEW YORK — Aretha Franklin believed Whitney Houston had overcome her demons and was primed for a comeback, which made learning of the troubled singer's death all the more shocking.

Franklin said she was watching TV in her hotel room in Charlotte, N.C., when she learned of Houston's death in a hotel suite across the country in Beverly Hills, Calif.

"I was sitting on the side of the bed," she said in an interview on NBC's "Today" show Friday. "I just jumped up off the side of the bed: 'What?! This could not be!'"
