Dynamite defense driving Fletcher during playoffs
Fletcher has been one of the most surprising teams in the state during the first two weeks of the playoffs.
The Senators went to Altamonte Springs Lake Brantley, ranked second in Class 8A in the Associated Press poll, and prevailed 28-14.
Last week, Fletcher pulled another surprise, beating DeLand on the road 24-7 in the regional semifinals to avenge a 28-14 loss on Oct. 7.
How are the Senators doing it? With defense.

Windy Barr and Justin Foden, both of Orange Park, were married at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at The Hilltop Club in Orange Park. The bride is the daughter of Natalie and Aaron Rohrer, Brooks, Ga., and the late Ralph Barr. The groom is the son of Linda Foden, Jacksonville, and the late Fred Foden. After a trip to The Gran Melia in Cancun, Mexico, the couple lives in Orange Park.

Drug investigations in Northwest St. Johns County net 4 in 2 separate cases
An ongoing investigation into illegal drug sales at various sites in Northwest St. Johns County has resulted in the arrest of one man in one case, and two more men and a teenage girl in another case, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.
The first arrest occurred Oct. 28 after deputies received complaints of a man selling drugs from his family’s home in the 300 block of Maplewood Drive. Sheriff’s Office investigators spotted someone selling drugs from the home, then get into a car that was stopped and marijuana found inside.

Jacksonville motorist’s death related to October crash
A Jacksonville woman involved in a rear-end collision in late October has died from injuries related to the crash, police said today.
Vivian C. Thomas, 67, of the 11600 block of Starfish Lane died Monday, two weeks following a crash in which no injuries were reported.
Thomas was westbound on Beach Boulevard at Florida 9A shortly after 2 p.m. Oct. 29 when she failed to stop and struck another vehicle from behind at a red light, the Sheriff's Office said. The other driver was not identified.
Losses spur Bolles volleyball team to postseason run
Coaches often preach to their players that they must be able to learn from losses.
The Bolles volleyball team received that type of education last month — courtesy of two area rivals.
The Bulldogs fell 3-1 to Fernandina Beach on Oct. 4, ending Senior Night on a disappointing note for Bolles seniors Gabby Mallette, Aubrey Del Rio and Hannah Schellenberg.
Nine days later, the Bulldogs lost 3-2 to district rival Episcopal.
Arrests made in Jacksonville Beach slaying
Jacksonville Beach police have charged three men following the shooting death of a Jacksonville man last month.
William Brown, 18, was charged with homicide after police located him in Fresno, Calif., police said.
Two others, Adam Holleran and Matthew Webber, both 27, were arrested in Neptune Beach. Holleran was charged with armed robbery and Webber was charged with being an accessory following an armed robbery.
About 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 28, Joshua Register, 33, of Jacksonville, was shot multiple times in a condominium complex parking lot at 107 25th Avenue South.
Putnam animal control officer resigns after dogs left in cages for weeks die
A Putnam County animal control officer resigned Oct. 31 after six dogs were found dead in cages where the owner left them to be picked up.
Officer Amanda Holiman was told on Sept. 26 to pick up six Chihuahuas and a Jack Russell terrier that were in three cages outside a residence in Interlachen Lakes Estates. Jeffrey Millican told an animal control employee he was being evicted and had lost his job so was moving. He called back the next day to say his dogs were still there and he was leaving.
