Grief on the holidays: A few practical ideas for coping

A pioneer dealing with the stages of grief was Elisabeth Kubler-Ross.

She described a linear five-step model consisting of denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

Since then, several experts have questioned the stages and proposed alternatives, or new ways of grieving.

Regardless of which theory fits, anyone must find a meaningful way to come to terms with a loss.

As the holidays approach, many of us must deal with memories of loved ones and also family members and others with whom there was friction and bad feelings.

The Jacksonville Jaguars place CB William Middleton on I.R.

The Jaguars have placed 25-year old cornerback William Middleton on the Injured Reserve List, ending his season due to a knee injury.  He played in 11 games for the Jaguars this year and he had 38 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 3 passes defensed and 1 interception.  He has now played in 39 games in his first three years with the Jaguars and he has 105 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, 1 sack, 4 passes defensed and 2 interceptions.  The Jaguars keep losing players in the secondary, so losing Middleton is going to hurt.

ACC Notebook: Clemson sliding into ACC title game

In only one other season has a team limped into the ACC Championship game like Clemson is Saturday.

The 20th-ranked Tigers (9-3) meet No. 5 Virginia Tech (11-1) in Charlotte, N.C., off a 34-13 loss to South Carolina that marked the second time in history that the Gamecocks have beaten Clemson three times in a row. Clemson has lost its past two games and three of four since starting the season 8-0 and are catching Virginia Tech on a seven-game winning streak that began after the Hokies’ only loss of the season — a 23-3 pasting by Clemson Oct. 1 in Blacksburg, Va.

Jaguars’ lease with Jacksonville makes a move difficult

The Jaguars' lease for EverBank Field includes steep barriers to the team moving elsewhere before it expires in 2027.

The biggest hurdle: The team would have to show that it's losing money, a claim that would open its books to public scrutiny and probably invite litigation.

Read the lease (opens on scribd.com)

Even if the team can show a loss, it would still be on the hook for millions of dollars in damages if it moved before the lease was up.

Jaguars fire Del Rio after 3-8 start in 9th year

The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired coach Jack Del Rio after a 3-8 start, parting ways with him during his ninth season. Del Rio's job security had been tenuous since owner Wayne Weaver said the coach needed to make the playoffs to secure a 10th season in Jacksonville. The Jaguars were essentially eliminated with Sunday's 20-13 loss to Houston. The Jaguars are struggling to sell tickets and host a Monday night game against San Diego. Del Rio leaves with a 69-73 record, including 1-2 in two playoffs appearances. The Jaguars didn't win the AFC South in any of his nine seasons. Weaver considered firing Del Rio after last season, but kept him partly because of the uncertainty surrounding the NFL lockout.

Despite speculation, Jaguars don’t make any coaching change

Wayne Weaver showed again Monday that he is one of the most patient owners in the NFL.

The Jaguars are 3-8 and eliminated from the AFC South race, but Weaver didn’t make a head-coaching change Monday.

There was much speculation that Weaver might make a move after the 20-13 loss to Houston. Two of the Jaguars’ next three games will be on national TV, against San Diego on Monday night and Dec. 15 at Atlanta. Del Rio’s status will likely be the subject of much speculation during those national telecasts.

Jaguars rookie QB Gabbert still the starter

Blaine Gabbert will remain the starting quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars despite his struggles. Coach Jack Del Rio said the rookie will start next Monday's game against the San Diego Chargers. Gabbert went 13 of 29 for 136 yards and an interception in Sunday's 20-13 loss to Houston. He was sacked a season-high six times. Del Rio benched Gabbert midway through the fourth quarter in favor of Luke McCown, who nearly rallied the Jaguars back. Gabbert, selected with the No. 10 pick in April's draft, has passed for 1,371 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions.
