First Coast homemaker clubs show how home economics skills are still important

Once upon a time, teenage girls in Duval County learned how to make fluffy biscuits, layer a casserole, thread a machine and sew a straight seam in mandatory home economics classes. Now those classes — colloquially called stitching and stirring — have almost disappeared, the victims of budget cuts and legislative changes.

Once upon a time, extension homemaker clubs, featuring programs on how to take better care of home and family, flourished across Jacksonville.

Orange Park will work Saturday on park for Somer Thompson

ORANGE PARK | Most of the Somer Thompson story is sad.

But town leaders here hope the latest chapter will bring a little sunshine.

They are inviting the community to come out Saturday to help put finishing touches on Somer’s Sunshine Park — a 1-acre parcel near where the 7-year-old was kidnapped and killed in 2009.

The grassy triangle at the intersection of DeBarry and Gano avenues already was public property. But the Somer Thompson Foundation asked the city last fall to make it an official memorial to Somer.

UNF students’ robot camera aids gopher tortoise research

Drop-in guests are no strangers to gopher tortoises. Certain snakes and frogs are routine roommates for the threatened species once common in Florida. Gopher tortoises calling the University of North Florida campus home, however, are being visited by a critter the likes of which they’ve never seen before.

Created by two UNF students and their professors, a subterranean robot camera mounted on miniature caterpillar tracks offers researchers a real-time view of the burrow’s occupants.
