Law & Disorder: Fire destroys Middleburg home; pet dog alerts family

A pet dog alerted a Middleburg family to their burning home Tuesday morning, saving them but the rest was a total loss.

Clay County Fire Rescue responded with about 20 firefighters about 5 a.m. at 4047 Lightning Lane near Thunder Road.

The three residents had evacuated and no injuries were reported.

OSHA issues citations in St. Augustine gas station explosion

A delivery driver badly burned in an explosion at a St. Augustine gas station had no way of knowing how much gas he could put in a tank that overflowed and caught fire, according to federal citations issued in the accident.

Jacksonville police: Hart Expressway reopened after pedestrian killed

2:11 p.m. All lanes of Hart Expressway at University Boulevard are open, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.


12:36 p.m. Northbound lanes of Hart Expressway at University Boulevard are still closed. Traffic is being diverted north onto University to Atlantic Boulevard and south onto University to Beach Boulevard.


A female pedestrian was struck and killed today while crossing Jacksonville's Hart Expressway.

Kennesaw bus driver stabbed with pen as he tried to defuse argument

KENNESAW, GA. | Authorities say a bus driver is recovering after being stabbed repeatedly with a pen northwest of Atlanta.

Cobb County police say the melee on the Cobb County Transit bus began when the driver tried to break up a dispute on the bus in Kennesaw Monday afternoon. Police say the fight was over a cell phone.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the driver went to the back of the bus to keep the quarrel from escalating, and a woman pulled a knife.

Jacksonville police seek driver after hit-and-run leaves pedestrian in life-threatening condition

Jacksonville police are looking for a driver they say hit a pedestrian this morning then fled the scene.

It happened about 6:30 a.m. in the 6900 block of Atlantic Boulevard, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The pedestrian was taken to Shands Jacksonville hospital with life-threatening injuries, said Sgt. R.A. Harville. The pedestrian's identity was not immediately available.

Crash investigators are working to learn more about the driver and vehicle. Police will provide a description when it is available.

Driver pulls in front of cruiser, causing crash, Jacksonville police tell First Coast News

A Jacksonville police cruiser was involved in a Tuesday morning crash at the Beaches, Times-Union news partner First Coast News reports.

Police at the scene told First Coast News a driver turned in front of an off-duty officer at A1A and Wonderwood Drive before 6:30 a.m., and the cruiser struck the vehicle.

The officer was not injured, and the other driver had a leg injury that was not serious, First Coast News reports.

Neither the officer nor the other driver was identified.

Busch brothers hit boiling point

DAYTONA BEACH — As soon as Kurt Busch finished his lunch in a busy media center last Thursday, he not only picked up his own trash, he offered to clean up everyone else’s mess.

The new and improved older of two racing brothers has vowed to have fun this year. He now seems committed to finding the best of each moment, whether it’s driving a race car or cleaning off a table.

NASCAR Notebook: Late surge gives Bobby Gerhart victory in ARCA race

DAYTONA BEACH | Bobby Gerhart went from fifth to Victory Lane in the final 150 yards of Saturday’s Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 to continue his domination of the ARCA Racing Series at Daytona International Speedway.

Gerhart veered to the right against the outside wall in a four-wide dash, pulling ahead just in time to avoid a seven-car pileup that started when leader Brandon McReynolds ran out of gas.

Quick workday for drivers in Daytona 500 qualifying

DAYTONA BEACH | Few days, if any, are any easier for a driver than today’s qualifying session for the Daytona 500. And none is more important.

The only work required today of all 49 drivers entered in the 500 is to drive two hot laps around the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway. Counting warm-up and a cool-down laps, their job will be done in less than five minutes.
