Hazing in the Florida A&M marching band has been happening for decades, former members from Jacksonville say, but they don’t blame ousted director Julian White for the continuance of the often violent tradition.

Convicted of first-degree murder Nov. 18, a Jacksonville man dodged the death penalty last week and was sentenced Friday to life in prison. But the state is still seeking the death penalty in two other murder cases against him.
Jurors took about 15 hours to convict DeShawn Leon Green, 27, in the August 2009 shooting of 28-year-old Willie Golden in a home on West 26th Street.
Prosecutors said Green killed Golden in retaliation of a drive-by shooting on a drug house that Green ran just two streets over from the shooting.
