Pieces of Jacksonville history have been donated to revive another part of the city’s past as the last tower marking the borders of the 86-year-old San Jose Estates community is restored by the Rotary Club of San Jose.
Tiles to rebuild the tower roof came from the Epping Forest Yacht Club’s boat house, also part of the failed 1925 development once marked by four towers on San Jose Boulevard.
The club took on the restoration in 2008, and $3,000 in donations plus about 450 tiles means a roof missing for decades will be replaced, said club tower chairman Jim Culp.

The community response to the Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry Thanksgiving Basket Challenge was “amazing,” with about 600 baskets donated and distributed, Sue Glawe, project coordinator said.
“That is the most Thanksgiving baskets ever donated to BEAM,” Glawe said.
Inside one donated basket was a note for its receiver that read, “Many years ago, I received a thanksgiving bag when I needed it. I pray someday you can give to others also.”
