Funny, but I was the kind of sportswriter who was derisive of conservative football coaches who spouted cliches such as, "play for the tie on the road."
That's exactly what I was going to settle for on a warm November night 30 years ago at the Orange Park Athletic Association football field.

Following a tumultuous week that featured the pending sale of the team, the firing of the head coach and a three-year extension for the general manager, the Jaguars will exhale Monday night.
They will catch their breath and play in prime time against the San Diego Chargers at EverBank Field.
Interim coach Mel Tucker makes his head coaching debut. Whether he lasts five games or more will depend on how quickly he can turn around his offensively challenged 3-8 team.

Florida coach Will Muschamp confirmed Sunday night during his Gator Bowl teleconference that UF director of strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti has left the program to join former UF coach Urban Meyer at Ohio State.
Meyer hired Marotti in 2005, luring him away from Notre Dame where he held the same position.
Muschamp will conduct a thorough search for Marotti’s replacement.

The San Diego Chargers (4-7) have lost six consecutive games, the franchise's longest losing streak in more than six years. The Jacksonville Jaguars (3-8) had a massive shake-up this week, firing coach Jack Del Rio, selling the team and making

Mel Tucker had a whirlwind courtship with his wife, Jo-Ellyn.
She was a Rutgers law school graduate and was set up on a blind date with Tucker by her roommate, who was a classmate of his at the University of Wisconsin.
They were coming to his hometown of Cleveland for a job fair and Tucker talked to her on the phone before that first date and was smitten.
“She was in law school, she was nice looking. I got to know her before we met. She never told me what I wanted to hear. I respect a person who tells you straight,’’ he said.

HOUSTON — If the Texans plan to defeat the favored Atlanta Falcons in rookie quarterback T.J. Yates' first start, the running game must be more productive than it was at Jacksonville. In what turned out to be coach 's last game, the Jaguars stuffed the

HISTORIC DAY FOR JAGUARS
A new era begins
Wow, what a day Tuesday was in Jacksonville!
Nov. 29th, 2011, will long be remembered as a day of major change for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Our team fired their coach, extended their general manager’s contract and announced a new owner.
It was overwhelming.
What an amazing run it has been for this great city — a city that is immeasurably better off for the Jaguars and Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver.
