Sometimes instead of dreaming of big ticket and expensive public financed projects for downtown revitalization, it's better to take a step back and attempt to understand the basics of what makes a space great. With this in mind, Project For Public Spaces (PPS) has identified 11 key elements in transforming public spaces into vibrant community places, whether they're parks, plazas, public squares, streets, sidewalks or the myriad other outdoor and indoor spaces that have public uses in common. What will it take for a community like Jacksonville to finally listen?

A Jacksonville man traveling the wrong way on Interstate 10 early Sunday collided head-on with a prisoner transport van, sending himself and nine in the van to hospitals.
Two passengers in the van, Di Do, 41, of Crossville, Tenn., and Kevin J. Vance, 45, whose residence was not listed, were taken to Shands at the University of Florida in critical condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The most popular thing out there for governments right now is to champion public-private partnerships (P3’s).
And what government wouldn’t want to do that when they can realize cost savings of 20 percent to 50 percent? To date, it seems that Mayor Alvin Brown’s focus on P3’s has been promoting parades and his mentors program. But is he leaving money on the table by not including any public dollars in these efforts?
